The Academies of Loudoun launched the inaugural hackathon competition for Loudoun County where the ACL Computer Science Honor Society organized computer science workshops for middle and high school students to participate in. They encompassed a diversity of subjects including robotics, machine learning, web development, virtual reality, Python/Java, IoT, and artificial intelligence. Several corporations and technology groups from the Northern Virginia area including the Janelia Research Institute, General Dynamics, Northrop Grumann Corporation, ManTech International, and Telos Corporation.
The participating students designed innovative projects that ranged from an algorithm to predict stock market price fluctuations, image recognition AI, augmented reality devices, user-interactive websites, and app design. Many of the ACL students that produced this Hackathon idealized collaboration, research, innovation, and meaningful contributions as the most efficient standards to exemplify the way students learned more about computer science and information technology.
AcademiesHacks has set a precedent for other schools in the Northern Virginia to adopt computer science, develop competitions and conference that promote the subject, and emphasize more integrative learning that not only immerses students in the field of computer science but makes them apply their education to produce an algorithm or application with practical context in business problems.
